How I got into holistic living

Growing up, I had the typical children’s diet…

processed cereals and snacks, excess refined sugars, food dyes, white bread, chicken nuggets, mac and cheese, etc. Once I moved out of my parents home I tried to eat better by shopping at health food stores and buying organic when I could. However, grocery shopping was always so stressful for me because of all the confusing labels. I wanted to eat better, but why did they have to make it so hard?

Fast forward to 2022.

I was newly married and decided to come off hormonal birth control with plans to start a family within the next 2-3 years.

I had a feeling for a few years leading up to this moment that taking synthetic hormones every single day for over 10 years was probably not doing my body any good. So I hit the internet looking for ways I could support my body during this process. However, my searches fell short, as I could find very minimal information on this topic.

And then because my iphone was listening to me and tracking my google searches, I started getting targeted reels and posts on Instagram about coming off the pill! I thought to myself, surely this can’t be true, why couldn’t I find this information on google? Well, one follow led to another led to another and I was suddenly immersed in this community of NTP’s and health coaches who seemed to have all of the answers.

So with nothing to lose, I decided to change my diet.

I started eating nutrient dense, whole foods, I eliminated gluten, dairy (temporarily), refined sugars and seed oils. I started balancing my macronutrient ratios (see blog post on How to Build a Balanced Plate).

I also ended up working 1:1 with an NTP, who helped me in ways I will never forget.

When I started this journey, I was doing it for me, but I truly had no idea the impact it would have on my husband, who suffered from eczema and acid reflux for as long as I had known him. I knew I was feeling good but it wasn’t until my husband told me he hadn’t experienced acid reflux in over a month that I knew this diet was credible. And when his eczema completely disappeared, we were almost in disbelief.

I started to notice patterns everywhere- with family members, friends and at work. At the time I worked as a pediatric Occupational Therapist, specializing in working with children on the Autism spectrum. Many of these children consumed a very limited diet. I thought to myself, if we are what we eat, then these children could have much greater potential, if I could find a way to help them eat better. Between my personal journey, my husbands, and the children I worked with, I knew it was time to enroll in the Nutritional Therapy Association and become a Nutritional Therapy Practitioner.

I was once where you are…

I ate the standard american diet and I wondered why my husband and I were in our 20’s yet taking medications every day. I wondered if there could be a different life in which that wasn’t necessary. It brings me such joy to guide my clients on their own holistic journeys for both themselves and their families. I don’t need google to tell me whether or not nutrition makes a difference because my clients are living (and thriving) with that difference every day!
